Garden Design Principle: Unity and Repetition

Unity and repetition are important aspects to consider when designing the garden of your dreams. In essence, this is where each area of your garden feels that they unite with one another, which is achieved through repeating similar colours, materials, textures and plants throughout the design.

An example of this could be that the colour of the bricks in a wall or property wall could be used within a garden patio or pathway, linking the house to the garden.

Other ways to achieve unity and repetition

  • Repeating patterns - The pattern style of a patio could be repeated in a path elsewhere in the garden.

  • Repeating colour - Colours can be repeated through material choices, lighting and planting choices.

  • Repeating ecosystems - Choosing plants from the same ecosystem can create unity. For example grouping alpines together in a gravel garden.

  • Linking the house and garden - Could be achieved through using similar materials or colours in the garden as those found in the brickwork of the house. Climbers could be grown up the side of a property wall.

  • Repeating plants and objects - Plants could be repeated throughout the design, which helps to create unity through the different garden zones. The same could be achieved by repeating decorative planters or similar objects which lead your eye across the space.

I hope this has been useful, happy gardening!
