Year round interest: creating a garden that looks great all year round.
When designing a new garden, its important to consider seasonal interest. By that I mean how your garden will look during each season.
With some careful planning you are able to create a garden that will not only look good during the summer months, but also during the cold dark winter months.
Let me share some tips of how to plan for seasonal interest in your own garden:
Evergreens are your friend
Evergreen is a type of plant that keeps its leaves all year round. It literally means forever green. By including evergreen planting throughout your garden it provides structure and foliage all year round.
Bulb underplanting
Why not try planting clusters of spring flowering bulbs at the base of a summer flowering plant or tree. This adds pops of colour while other planting remains dormant.
Create a window display
Just how a shop may display in their store window a selection of their best items, you can do this with a window box or other container.
This gives you the option to change it up from time to time, adding colour and texture throughout the year.
Climbers
Another trick that works really well is when you grow climbing plants through another tree or shrub such as a rose. While the non flowering plant is dormant, the climber can fill the space with colour.
Planning
For people that know me, they will tell you that I love a plan! When choosing planting for your garden, take a look at what months of the year the plant will flower, fruit or have their foliage etc.
Now it's a simple task of aiming to have a few plants each month that are at their best. This creates a space that grows, evolves and changes through the seasons.
