The Design Brief
For this case study, the brief was to design a family garden. The preferred style was for a nature inspired garden, but also a ‘shabby chic’ space to enjoy with family and friends.
Colour preferences include cream, greens and rusty reds which have become integral to the design. As this is a family garden, it was important that the garden was both child friendly and also provided plenty of space for play, including riding bikes around the garden.
Adequate space was required in which to grow fruit, vegetables and herbs as well as a private outside eating space which could comfortably accommodate ten to twelve people.
The Solution
I have designed a nature inspired garden where the focus has been on creating a family friendly space with a variety of plants, vegetables and herbs. To create a cottage garden style design, I have packed the borders with colourful planting which is combined with a range of edibles.
Colours of creams, greens and rusty reds have been woven throughout the design. Evergreen planning has been carefully chosen to provide year round structure and interest, where pops of colour can be enjoyed throughout the year.
The sound of running water was an important element of the design brief. I wanted to create a fun and child safe water feature that would enhance the country / cottage garden feel of the design and have therefore included an ‘Old watermill’ style water feature.
